Our prototype the Toy Box helps guide and protect the privacy of domestic violence (DV) victims during online trials.

With the onset of Covid-19, courts have shifted to online proceedings, complicating an already convoluted process that is the legal system. For the victims of domestic violence (DV), or specifically Intimate Partner Violence, this may mean increased risks such as accidently giving away their location to their abuser via clues from their video background. For our proposal, we designed an onboarding box to help protect the privacy of the litigant and their children while helping streamline the process of a DV hearing. The box contains 4 elements:
Although we are making the assumption that these boxes will be handed to those who have moved away from their abuser and are in safe spaces, the box is also designed to look like a "toy box" as an added layer of protection, and not to make it look so blatantly like a "domestic violence help kit."

- A collapsible paper screen that provides a neutral background for the video call and helps shield children from accidently running into the frame during the hearing
- An illustrated guide to help inform the litigant of how to use Zoom or outline the hearing procedures, while also providing additional resources such as the contact info of local nonprofits
- Toys that may help keep children occupied
- Headphones
