From medicine in ancient China to paint in ancient Egyptian tomb paintings, the yellow-orange mineral orpiment served many uses. However, the mineral contains Arsenic and is highly toxic, as it was alternatively used to poison the tips of arrows and as fly poison. Nonetheless, orpiment was also a favorite among Western and Chinese alchemists alike in search of a method to create gold. As a versatile mineral in art, medicine, and alchemy, perhaps orpiment was, in fact, as valuable as gold ??
