BOOK OF YOKAI: JAPANESE MYTHICAL CREATURES A TO Z

Spring 2017

Prof. Camella D. Kim
UCLA | Los Angeles, California
Yokai(妖怪)is the name given to Japanese mythical creatures that appear in traditional Japanese folklore. This book gives an illustrated (but not exhaustive) A through Z list of yokai from the well-known ryu (dragon) to the lesser-known ungaikyo (a yokai that takes the form of a mirror). From the illustration style to the choice of paper, cover material, and binding, I sought to characterize and display these creatures in the way that remained most faithful to its traditional Japanese origins. As an individual with Japanese heritage as well, the project gave an opportunity to look deeper into the art of bookbinding and the rich history behind Japanese myth and folklore.
